The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning health care professionals that there are increasing "reports of suicidal thoughts and aggressive and erratic behavior in patient who have taken Chantix, a smoking cessation product."

In addition, the the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned pilots from using Chantix, due to a report issued by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) . In the report, ISMP stated that according the FDA, there were 988 serious injuries associated with Chantix in the fourth quarter of 2007 alone.

The ISMP states that Chantix "…is suspected in various adverse drug event reports of causing a wide spectrum of injuries, including serious accidents and falls, potentially lethal cardiac rhythm disturbances, severe skin reactions, acute myocardial infarction, seizures, diabetes, psychosis, aggression and suicide."

According to the FDAthere are also numerous"…reports of patients experiencing drowsiness that affected their ability to drive or operate machinery. " The FDA currently is in the process of reviewing these reports.
