According to a study conducted at the, Oregon Health and Science University Cancer Institute, findings show the important role that the protein FANCD2 plays in protecting lung cells against cigarette smoke.

It has been concluded that the protein FANCD2 is a key because high levels were resistant to the toxic levels of smoke. Cigarette smoking curbed the production of FANCD2 and as a result low levels lead to DNA damage. After five years without smoking the risk of a heart attack was lowered by half than that of a smoker and after 10 years the lung cancer fell by half also.
