Readers Digest, September 2005

According to the Readers Digest your sense of balance is one sign of brain strength Try this: Stand on one leg and then close your eyes. If you can stand without falling for 20 seconds or longer it is very good. It is to your advantage to use dumbbells as it helps to develop you “ proprioception” which helps you develop your balance and also stimulates the neural pathways. According to the Readers Digest, weight machines don’t appear to have the same effect because the weight are attached to a fixed surface so you don’t develop your balance abilities as your lift them.
